Fishing Report 7/29/11

July 29th, 2011

The BENMAR went out early today to catch the tide and was already heading in at 11AM when Capt. George called in his report.  The Stripers were cooperative out on the reefs where a great group from Allen and Bork construction were able to put 9 linesiders in the cooler.  They also kept 4 blues, 3 slab-sized porgies and a giant black sea bass!

July 28th, 2011

A nice group from the Springfield area took advantage of the special 5 hour striper trip with Capt. George and hooked up with 8 nice linesiders of which 4 landed in the cooler.  There was also some action from the porgies and a couple of bluefish to keep things interesting.  Good dates available in August!  Talk with the captain @ 413-374-4199.

Despite having to endure a short but intense squall that ran across the sound, the Voll family, long time BENMAR customers, had a solid performance out there catching up bass, blues and porgies!

The bite was back on today as Capt. George found a good mess of fish out near Watch Hill.  Our anglers had constant action and went home with 5 big blues and 10 keeper bass.  The heat wave seems to be lifting and the weather should be getting back to normal!

Fishing Report 7/22/11

July 22nd, 2011

The heat finally got to Mystic today with calm seas and just very warm conditions.  It seemed to make the fish lethargic as well as the bass just didn’t bite and the blues were only half interested.  Fortunately our anglers were a lively bunch who made their own fun and kept the captain and crew entertained with colorful comments!

July 22nd, 2011

A breezy day today which helped keep it from feeling too hot.  The fishing was pretty good with some large stripers and blues pulled in by the capable group of anglers.

It was a good day for Red and friends…a regular on the BENMAR who likes to do a combo trip for Bass and bottom fish.  Both parts of the trip went well with nine keeper bass, five big sea bass and a half dozen keeper fluke down off Misquamicut Beach.

Fishing Report 7/17/11

July 17th, 2011

The wind kicked up today and made things more difficult.  Our anglers still managed to put some fish in the cooler and enjoy the cool sea breezes!

Excellent fishing out there today.  Many stripers landed with 9 nice keepers.  Also 5 big blues went into the cooler.

July 12th, 2011

Mark from Queens brought his nephew out on the BENMAR today to do a little bottom fishing and they got into the porgies, fluke and sea bass in a big way….filling the cooler with the tasty critters!  Mark likes to fish with light spinning tackle which makes those jumbo porgies a blast to catch.  They topped it off with a nice keeper striper so it was pretty much the ideal trip!

Fishing Report 7/11/11

July 11th, 2011

Well, as good as the fishing was on Saturday it was a surprise to have it not so good the last two trips.  Just a scattering of bass, blues and porgies but not up to the expectations of Capt. George and mate Louie.

Fishing Report 7/09/11

July 10th, 2011

The fog went away and it was a beautiful Saturday.  The fish also cooperated and “Benji’s Boys” did an excellent job of reeling in their limit of stripers plus a number of blues as well.  It’s days like this that being a charter boat captain is a real joy!

Fishing Report 7/08/11

July 8th, 2011

The fog has been thick lately and has hampered our fishing efforts.  It’s hard to get on the exact right spot without visual landmarks even though we have GPS and radar.  However, we have been close enough to put some stripers and fluke into the boat and our anglers have gone home with some nice fish dinners.  The Foley Insurance group today had four nice striper keepers up to 37 inches.  The Blues are in and sometimes their sharp teeth cut the line but they are welcome as an additional quarry that provides a unique challenge for our BENMAR patrons.

July 5th, 2011

Another excellent day out on the reefs with several large stripers up close to 40 inches.  Also…..the first blue fish came into the boat.  It was a real gorilla!  Tides were ripping but Capt. George knows a trick or two to get to the fish.

Fishing Report 7/03/11

July 4th, 2011

No fireworks today out on the water but a decent trip with 5 keeper bass up to 37 inches, some throwbackers and a half dozen porgies.  The anglers managed to also return to the dock just before the rain showers started.  Capt. George is taking the 4th off to spend with the family but will be back on the water for the rest of the week trying his darndest to put the BENMAR anglers in a spot to catch the big ones!

Fishing Report 7/2/11

July 2nd, 2011

The weather cooperated and so did the fish.  The action on the incoming tide lasted throughout the charter and resulted in about 20 stripers coming over the side with 8 of them staying in the cooler.  There were also a good number of porgies but still no blues!  Capt. George says it is the best striper run in several years….give him a call to get in on the action @ 413-374-4199.

After getting blown off the water yesterday, Capt. George was glad to see the long weekend starting off with kinder seas.  Todays group did well with bass and fluke.  There were seven stripers in the cooler and five nice fluke with a whopper going 27 inches!  Surprisingly, still no bluefish but it is likely that someone will hook one before the weekend is over.

Fishing Report 6/29/11

June 29th, 2011

No report for the last three days because the boat was at the dock waiting for a new oil cooler.  Back in business today and a good group from Saratoga who have been out with Capt. George before, had to fish a bit but managed to get 5 keeper bass, 4 large fluke and a bunch of porgies in the cooler.  July should bring in the blues along with plenty more bass and, of course, steady fluke, sea bass and porgy action!

Fishing Report 6/24/11

June 24th, 2011

The hits keep coming!  Todays group got their limit of stripers before noon so Capt. George took them fluke fishing to round out the day and they bagged a couple of 23 inchers that will provide some excellent filets!  There was a smattering of large porgies and some nice jumbo sea bass that also came aboard but the sea bass got to go back in because they are not in season until July 1st in CT and July 11th in RI.

Fishing Report 6/23/11

June 23rd, 2011

The Benmar sailed early today and got the trip in before all the rain arrived so it was pretty nice conditions out there.  There were a lot of bites but some of the guys were new to bass fishing and it took a little while to get the technique down but they did end up putting seven nice keepers in the cooler along with 2 keeper fluke and a half dozen jumbo porgies which have just arrived on the scene.   We’re still waiting for the first bluefish!  All and all a great day on the water with a great bunch of guys and we’re glad they booked another trip!

Fishing Report 6/20/11

June 20th, 2011

The Mongeau group got out there today hoping to get in on some of the outrageous bass fishing that the Benmar customers have been enjoying lately and they were not disappointed.  Another limit of fiesty linesiders with the big fish topping out at a whopping 39 inches.  It doesn’t get much better!

Fishing Report 6/19/11

June 19th, 2011

Early in the season, the Benmar had a nice group on board but they had one of our very rare bad days of fishing.  We mentioned in our report at the time that Capt. George would give them a special day later and today was that day.  Jack Moore with family and friends had excellent results with plenty of big bass.  They were throwing back legal fish because they got their limit so quickly.  It was a beautiful father’s day…..everyone had a great time and a future trip is already booked!  The striper fishing has been red hot lately so give Capt. George a call at 413-374-4199.

Fishing Report 6/18/11

June 18th, 2011

Joe Nassar and friends, who are regulars on the Benmar, showed that they really know how it is done.  Despite a foggy day that made it take a little longer to get out to the hot spot, this group took only a few hours to limit out on nice fat stripers up to 35 inches.  The water is still cool so there were no porgies or blues to horn in on the action…..it was all bass!

Fishing Report 6/17/11

June 17th, 2011

Yesterday’s trip was an all-girl affair with a nice group from New Haven.  As usual, the women are willing to listen and follow suggestions so they all caught fish and had a very nice day.  They went home with five nice keepers and planned to cook up some great fish dinners!  Today’s trip was shortened due to lightning on the horizon.  Too bad because the fish were starting to come over the rail pretty good.  Capt. George will make it up to them down the road.

Fishing Report 6/10/11

June 11th, 2011

The “Hockey Dads” had an excellent day out near the east end of Fishers Isand limiting out on bass and throwing back about 20 more.  The season has gotten off to a great start especially with respect to stripers which seem to be more numerous and of better size than the last couple of years.  Although we haven’t spent much time going after fluke, the reports from fellow fisherman are that the big ones have been hard to come by but the numbers are picking up in recent days.  Porgies are being caught offshore by the draggers so it won’t be long before they arrive in our nearshore waters.

Fishing Report 6/7/11

June 7th, 2011

Another excellent day out on the Watch Hill reefs.  The Dunphy group down from Saratoga NY scooped up their limit of linesiders.  Nice fat fish up to 37 inches.  In addition to the 12 keepers there were many throwbacks and even a fluke and a couple of skates so the action was pretty much non-stop.

June 6th, 2011

We had visitors all the way from Hong Kong today!  A great family group that learned the ropes quickly and ended up with a nice catch of 6 keeper stripers up to 37 inches along with 7 throwbacks and a large blackfish also returned to the deep.  It was a beautiful day on the water and loads of fun for all.  We have an opening on Saturday, June 11th.  Talk about a prime date….the outgoing tide starts about 7:30 AM that day so it should be perfect for chunking at the reef for stripers.  Call the Captain @ 413-374-4199.

Fishing Report 6/3/11

June 3rd, 2011

It was a bit breezy out there today but the Moriarty group kept their feet under them and fished well in the waves.  They ended up with 7 keeper bass and several throwbacks.  There were also a few small fluke and a few huge skates!  A reef out near Watch Hill R.I. served up the linesiders today.

Fishing Report 5/31/11

May 31st, 2011

It was a very nice memorial day weekend.  Saturday and Sunday the fish really cooperated with limits of stripers and a few fluke keepers as a bonus.  Unfortunately, the fish just disappeared on Monday and it was a tough day so Capt. George will make it up to that group with a special day in the future.  All in all, the May bite was very good and the Benmar anglers have decked a bunch of quality fish.  The fishing season is off to a good start!

Fishing Report 5/25/11

May 25th, 2011

It was a beautiful day on the water and Capt. George had a great group on board.  They fished the outgoing tide at the east end of Fishers Island and decked numerous stripers with ten nice ones ending up in the cooler.  A couple of good sized blackfish also found their way into the net but got returned to the deep because they are not in season.  The bass were nice clean fish in the 32 inch range and showed signs of having chowed down on local squid.  Sunday, May 29 is still open if you are looking for something special to do on the holiday weekend.
